taupō economic strengthening.
Synergine’s engagement with Taupō District Council began in early 2017 with a brief to provide an economic strategy for the district as the Council moved towards refreshing their Long-Term Plan. Over time, the engagement grew as a result of Synergine’s holistic thinking to encompass the social, environmental and cultural aspects of Taupō's growth and to produce a region wide strategy.
Throughout the process, Synergine had significant engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, in particular Synergine forged a strong relationship with the local iwi, Tuwharetoa. The culmination of this engagement was a hui which took place in Turangi and was the first time that all four arms of the iwi had met together.
Through this engagement, Synergine identified a range of key catalyst infrastructure projects, selected and designed specifically to unlock the potential in the region through targeted investment. These catalyst projects were informed by in-depth stakeholder interviews, analysis of data sets and documents held by Taupō District Council, reviews of existing infrastructure condition and performance, and analysis of the economic trends of the region.
