The Winston Reid Foundation vision included making character-based football training and development available to as many young people as possible. Winston created a pathway for himself that enabled him to attend a professional academy during his development years and had a desire to make that available to other players, particularly those who came from less fortunate circumstances.

Synergine was initially engaged to design a state-of-the-art football academy to international best practice standards for Winston Reid and a consortium of investors. Following investigations on a range of sites across Auckland, the most advantageous option included the extensive refurbishment of an existing building by utilizing the steel structure to maximise the footprint which was limited to 25% of the site. The design features a ‘folded’ timber screen at the first floor floating above a transparent ground floor plane, allowing unobstructed views into the internal courtyard and cafe area.

The design scope included:
•    2x Full size floodlit, football pitches
•    State of the art gymnasium
•    On-site sports medicine facilities
•    Lecture rooms and conference spaces
•    Football related office tenancies
•    60 bed student hostel facility
•    Sports pavilion with viewing deck and lecture rooms

The original concept envisaged the building of a stand-alone residential academy in New Zealand but this vision has grown and adapted to the prospect of an online development system, the utilisation of dedicated camps and eventually the construction of character-based schools with embedded football academies.
